The lenten season has started and one of the busiest edifices during this season are the catholic fortresses: shrines and churches.Visita Iglesia is a catholic tradition werein pious are pilgriming to seven or more various churches to commemorate Jesus’s life. Here in the Philippines, it is evident everytime this season commences. Some preferred travelling to provinces due to its historical features and rich devotions of some churches in the latter. Pampanga, Bulacan, Ilocos from the north, Laguna and Batangas from the South are few of the examples.
But if you happen to choose to have Visita Iglesia in the metro, we have come up the lists of churches to visit to.
1. National Shrine of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, New Manila, Quezon City
Nested in between the city of San Juan and Manila, the National Shrine of Nuestra Senora del Carmen is a must see church in Quezon City featuring the recent episcopally crowned image of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel.
2. Abbey of Our Lady of Montserrat, Mendiola, Manila City
The Abbey of Our Lady of Montserrat has its own unique devotion to the lady and to their famous image of Sto. Nino de Praga.
3. National Shrine of St. Jude Thaddeus, Manila City
Not that far from Mendiola, the National Shrine of St. Jude Thaddeus believed to be the place to visit for your personal petitions.
4. National Shrine of St. Michael and the Archangels, San Miguel, Manila City
Physically located beside the ground of Malacanan Palace, the National Shrine of St. Michael and the Archangels offers nostalgic feats due to its rich history of the past.
5. Minor Basilica of Immaculate Conception (Metropolitan Cathedral of Manila), lntramuros, Manila City
The Mother Church of the Philippines, the Metropolitan Cathedral of Manila is the seat of the Archbishop of the Archiocese of Manila.
6. St. Augustine Church, Intramuros, Manila City
One of the two surviving church edifice after the war (aside from Manila Cathedral), in Intramuros. This church has a sprawling garden inside their convent. You can also have a tour inside their museum to know more of their rich history of Augustinian presence in the Philippines.
7. St. Sebastian Church, Manila City
One of the two National Shrines of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, the Steel Church of Asia stands firm but needs further restoration.
The church is also famous for its Canonically Crowned Image of theNuestra Senora del Carmen.
8. Sto. Domingo Church, Quezon Ave., Quezon City
The Nuestra Senora del Santisimo Rosario, the first ever Canonically Crowned Marian Image of the Philippines is nested and venerated in this church. Year 1954 when it was declared as the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary.
